The client’s brief to SHROFFLEoN was clear: a stylish and contemporary home built around a minimalistic material palette.
Located in Spring Mills, Wadala, the three-bedroom apartment on the 11 floor has stunning views – it overlooks the Sea Link on the western as well as the eastern fronts. The apartment, straddling an area of 1,750 sq. ft, encompasses a large living room and a wraparound terrace – something that’s a luxury by Mumbai standards.
The client had, over discussions, shown a definite penchant for wood, says designer duo Kayzad Shroff and Maria I.J. Leon. This translated into their wanting a feature element on the long 35-feet wall in the living room. SHROFFLEoN’s response was a “PU-finished laser-cut MDF-panelled wall, where each piece is of a different size and porosity, in terms of perforations. The panels are backed by polished veneer.
“The primary challenge was to ensure that the 48 different pieces were meticulously placed, since even a variation of an inch would be quite visible. We had to be on the site continuously for close to seven days when this element was being set up,” says Shroff.
The bar elongates and stretches onto the ceiling, providing a definition for the dining space below. Each of the three bedrooms reflects the character of the person it belongs to. “The master bedroom has a woody appeal, the son’s showcases a masculine gray glass, while the daughter’s room weds white and shocking pink,” says Leon.
SHROFFLEoN has worked colours, material and spaces to create a warm and appealing interior space – one that calls out to the home-owners, inviting them to rest and relax a while before stepping out into the hurly-burly of life again. It’s what a home should be – a sanctuary of sorts!
