For that casual and ethnic look, design low-level seating areas, says Suvasini Sridharan

Floor level decor not only adds an interesting dimension to rooms but makes the most of space. “Low seating is something Indians are used to, as sitting on the floor is part of our tradition,” says Krsna Mehta, Design Director and Partner at India Circus. “Planning the placement of furniture requires careful thought and low seating is best for living rooms as it creates an illusion of space.”

To create this decor, first decide which part of the room you want it in. “If you are placing the low-seating area against a wall you will be left with a lot of blank wall space,” says Rohina Anand, Owner and Head Designer of AA Living. “Place a large painting or mirror behind the area to help style the space.” You need to pick the right pieces to make the corner stand out but luckily it doesn’t require much furniture, making it a budget-friendly option. Just an artfully placed pile of cushions and rug can make a pretty space.

"The first aspect to the look is an Indian dhurrie on the floor. If it’s a corner, place the dhurrie there before you place any furniture. Diwan- style mattresses work well, with large, comfortable cushions,” says Sanvari Alagh Nair, Founder of Houseproud.in. “A low trunk as coffee table adds to the décor. A low ottoman adds comfort.”

Whatever furniture you use should be low and easily accessible. “Lots of low stools and low side and centre tables can accentuate the aesthetics and are also functional,” says Sona Reddy, Interior Designer and Founder of Room Therapy. “What works well is a bunch of floor cushions around a comfortable centre table.”

When it comes to colours you can't go wrong with neutral shades, with a colour pop by way of cushions or bolsters.

If a particular colour or theme catches your fancy, incorporate it. Make the area yours — place a bookshelf and lamp to create a reading corner. If you love greenery, bring in some indoor plants.

Create a cozy nook where you can settle down with a book or cup of tea, or entertain informally when pals drop in.
