On Children’s Day, Karadi Path (an offshoot of Karadi Tales) presents Karadi Rhymes — Once Upon a Bak Bak Tree , a musical based on Karadi’s children’s rhymes. Produced by Karadi Tales and Evam, the play celebrates Indian childhood through songs and stories from Karadi Tales’ rhymes audiobooks. And to add some magic to the evening Indian pop singer Usha Uthup will perform live as part of the musical.
Long association
“If you ask me exactly when I met the Karadi Tales team, I would not be able to tell you. But it seems like forever, for that is the connect we share,” says the singer, who is in the city. “Karadi Tales combines three important elements very well — mind, heart and soul. And because they do all this with others who think on the same wave-length, it clicked very well. Since I have been with them from inception, it is lovely to be here as part of this production. I do hope we can take it forward from here.”
The singer also points out that a lot of hard work goes behind each rhyme, and the collaboration that has taken place over the years represents what the country is truly about. “For the rhymes I had sung for, we had people from Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata (where I was) working on it. In a way, the work that Karadi has done represents India. And the whole idea of Indian rhymes for children is so nice,” she says, while Shobha Viswanath, co-founder, Karadi Tales adds, “It was to displace the Jacks and Jills that our children keep singing about. We needed other English rhymes they could sing.”
The play incorporates rhymes that were penned by Shobha Viswanath and a soundtrack by 3 Brothers and a Violin, and will be staged today at Tapovan Hall, Chinmaya Heritage Centre, Chetpet at 7 p.m. Tickets cost Rs. 250, Rs. 500 and Rs. 750, and are available on >www.eventjini.com , >www.bookmyshow.com and >www.indianstage.in .
