The Real Inspector Hound
by Quaff Theatre, (Mumbai)
Venue: Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Vyalikavil
Time: 7.30 p.m.
“The Real Inspector Hound” is a short one-act play by Tom Stoppard. Written by Stoppard between 1961 and 1962, the plot traces his experiences as a Bristol theatre critic.
The play is being brought to us by Quaff Theatre and has been directed by Prashant Prakash and Nayantara Kotian. This is the same duo who in 2009 won the MetroPlus Playwright Award for their play “The Skeleton woman”. The play is a spoof of the stereotypical parlour mystery and much like Stoppard's earlier plays examines the ideas of fate and free will, as well as exploring the themes of the “play within a play”.

Memories — we seem to make them what we want them to make us seem. It is easy to revel in the warmth of old joint family memories-eating mangoes, picking heavy mattresses and carrying them through narrow staircases, but now living in a huge apartment with only one-and-a-half-persons. How easy it is to capture the essence of memory in a single wistful gesture. It does not matter if you get the memory or not…. suffice to say that the gesture has been wonderful enough for the doer. And of course boarding school memories; father coming; confabulation, Hindi literature; confabulation. And of course there is my immense preoccupation with mirth, which try as it might, cannot explain my astounding 130-kilo girth. If only Sacks knew what to do for his patients, if only Sacks knew what we do to his essays. If only you knew the sincerity behind each fabrication that we, with integrity, confabulate for you…if only I knew what I just said…if only, only if...if only.
