The Mahasamprokshanam (consecration) of Sri Sundara Kothandarama Perumal temple is scheduled to be performed on April 21. The festivities and other rituals associated with it will begin from April 19.
Sri Sundara Kothandarama Perumal Temple is situated at Nallur village, Sirkazhi taluk of Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu. The origin of this Chola temple is steeped in antiquity.
According to mythology, the temple marks the spot where sage Viswamitra, along with Rama and Lakshmana, stayed on their way to Sirkazhi, and performed a yagna.
Separate niches
Lord Rama along with Lakshmana, Sita and Hanuman are enshrined here. The main idols are carved out of stone while the Utsava idols are made of Panchaloka.
This temple exemplifies the ancient architecture of the Thanjavur district and is made of special bricks held by lime mortar. Until a few years ago, the temple was in a state of disrepair.
Renovation work
A group of non-resident and resident natives of the village, formed a Trust and took up the renovation of the temple.
Balalayam was performed on June 17, 2007, and the renovation work started. Now repair works at the maha mantapam, sanctum sanctorum, vimanam and temple roof have been completed. The temple kitchen was demolished and re-built.
An amount of Rs. 30 lakhs has been spent so far for the renovation and Rs. 4 lakhs is needed for the consecration.
