Situated 16 km west of the ancient city of Kanchipuram, is the Vadaillupai village, located on the banks of River Palar. It is home to the Siva temple, where the deity is worshipped as Marundeeswarar, along with Goddess Kamakshi. This sacred place, also known by other names such as Brahma Vidya Puram, Dindima Kavi Kshetram and Madhuca Kshetra, finds mention in the hymns of Arunagirinathar.
It has also been visited and worshipped by great scholars such as Tapovanam Gnanananda Swamigal, Seshadri Mahan and musicians. Many pontiffs of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam have also worshipped the deity at Vadaillupai.
Maha Periyava of Kanchi had stayed at this sacred place many times, including in 1984, before Vasantha Panchami on his way to Kanchipuram.
The ancient temple is getting spruced up and preparations are under way for consecrating Swarna Akarshana Bhairavar and other deities. This is one of the rare places where Swarna Akarshana Bhairavar is seen with His consort.
In this temple, the image of Anjaneya directly faces Dakshinamurti, a rare feature. Another aspect, not commonly seen, is that the lingam (Sri Marundeeswarar), faces West.
The Brindavanam of the great Veda vidwan, Brahmasri Kumaraswami Deekshither is found in this place. Work on the Ishwara, Anjaneya and Dharma Sastha shrines is on as also the construction of the compound wall.
It is planned to perform the sacred yagam, known as Thatanka Pratishtai, along with the kumbabishekam and also the installation of Sri Chakra for Kamakshi Amman as per the Sri Vidya Mantra Sastra. Guru Puja is to be conducted shortly at this shrine.
