The Tamil Nadu Government Music college, functioning under Art and Culture Department, is organising a three-day Tamil music festival from February 9 to 11, at Tagore Kalai Arangam in the Music College Campus.
The festival will be inaugurated by P.A. Mani, Commissioner of Art and Culture. Seven musicians will be honoured with the title ‘Kalai Nirai Vithagar' for their contribution to the field of Tamil Isai.
V. Jayapal, deputy director, Art and Culture Department, Tamil Nadu Government, will honour the awardees and deliver special address and Thanjai Natarajan, principal, Government Music College, the welcome address.
The awardees are R. Vedavalli, R.V. Krishnan, K.A. Pakirisamy Bharathi, E.M. Subramaniam and Sembanarkoil K. Kalayanasundaram.
The first day programme begins with ‘Penmaisudar,' a dance drama by Parvathi Ghantasala on Feb. 9, 12 noon followed by ‘Nandanar Charitam,' a musical discourse by Visakha Hari (2.30 p.m). The line-up includes a violin concert by M. Narmadha, vocal recital by Thopur B. Sairam , Rama Venkataraman's dance programme and veena concerts of Karukurichi A. Balaji and V. Sivaranjani. The Music College offers 14 different courses in music. Besides the regular courses, a diploma course in teachers' training is also being conducted here. ‘Kalai Mani' is the certificate given by this institution.
