Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasraj is one of the most revered voices in Indian classical music today. The vocal tradition in Indian music has a rich, varied and popular history but Pandit Jasraj’s voice has garnered a huge global following as well. Initiated into music by father Pandit Motiram, he later trained under elder brother and guru Pandit Maniram and spiritual guru Maharaja Jaiwant Singh. His powerful voice easily traverses four and a half octaves and the ability to blend the classical with the lyrical, a quintessential feature of the Mewati gharana, is his trademark. Pandit Jasraj’s fluent interplay between notes and words evokes intense moods and emotions.
Despite his deep classical underpinning, Pandit Jasraj has been a fluent innovator as well, who created the Jasrangi jugalbandi, where a male and a female singer sing in their respective scales with individual accompaniments to create one sensuous sound. In this concert, he is accompanied by famous flautist Shashank Subramanyam, his disciple in Hindustani Classical music, whose main style is Carnatic classical but who is known for the patterns of improvisation that he incorporates from Hindustani music into his playing.
