Music is a reflection of the genius of man, says musician and musicologist Dr. Radha Bhaskar in her introduction to this twin-DVD pack. “It calms the mind and creates a peaceful ambience,” she goes on before elaborating on the evolution of and different genres of music unique to the Indian sub-continent.
The recording of a workshop which Radha conducted in Muscat, the twin-DVD pack provides an elaborate introduction to music in general, and Carnatic music, in particular.
In the first DVD, Radha talks about the evolution of music over time. “Music is part and parcel of life, and for every occasion, there are special songs,” she says. To illustrate, she sings a lullaby and an ‘oonjal’ song. The lecture, which touches upon the distinctive features of folk, popular and devotional, is peppered with clips of various genres of music, from namasankirtanam to raga-based films songs.
The second DVD focusses on the basics of classical music, both Carnatic and Hindustani. “It is one of the most aesthetic and scientific systems,” Radha explains. Be it the role of the tambura or the way the musicians are seated, every aspect is elucidated. Then she goes on to explain ragas, swaras and raga alapana, how artists innovate and the appeal of classical music. Music can be appreciated at many levels – emotional, intellectual and spiritual, she adds.
