Benny Dayal is on a high. The singer sounds delighted over the phone when asked about the title song of the Imran Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu , which is topping music charts. “Yes, I am happy that the song Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is doing well. It is the first song I have rendered for music director Amit Trivedi, who is a good friend and a person whose music I have always admired. It was great fun working with him.”

Four songs for Imran

The song also marks his “fourth song for Imran Khan.” Says Benny: “I sang two songs in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na ( Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana and Pappu Can't Dance Sala ), which marked my entry into the Bollywood music industry. I then sang Choomanter in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan .”

While most Southern singers find it tough to make their voice heard in Bollywood, Benny seems to have done so.

“It is all, thanks to A.R. Rahman sir, who gave me a break in Bollywood through Jaane Tu… The road through Bollywood is no bed of roses, but I guess I am lucky that most music directors feel I have a pliable voice. This could be a reason why they give me songs set in various genres such as Tu hi tho meri dosth hai in Yuvraaj , Kaise Mujhe in Ghajini , Tarkeebein and Dum Dum Mast in Band Baaja Baarat , Pocket Mein Rocket in Rocket Singh Salesman of the Year , and Aadat Se Majboor in Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl . I won't say I am lucky, I would say I am thankful to God for blessing me with such songs.”

The singer is currently keeping his fingers crossed for his duet with Shilpa Rao, Jab Main Tumhare Saath Hoon from Jodi Breakers , which will hit theatres soon.

Ask him about his upcoming tunes and he replies with his trademark answer: “I'm not someone who talks about it before it comes out. Let it be a surprise to my listeners.” And with songs such as Pappu Can't Dance Sala , Dum Dum Mast , Choomanter and now Ek Mein Aur Ekk Tu , the surprises are sure to continue.
