A thousand year old Siva temple is being reconstructed in Villupuram district. A huge Siva linga that was lying for a long time made the residents of Annamputhur, a village in Tindivanam, approach the Archaeological Survey of India for details.

What the officials found after excavation was ruins of a temple built by the Pallavas. Chola inscriptions revealed the fact that the deity was Sri Nidiswarar. The kings had made generous grants for the maintenance of the temple raised with granite and bricks. The brick structure had caved in leaving the lingam on top. An idol of Ganapati carved out of a single stone was there too. According to inscriptions Brahma worshipped the deity here to get rid of a curse.

Kubera offered prayers

Kubera is said to have offered prayers here and acquired eight kinds of wealth (Paduma nidi, Mahapadma nidi, etc.) That explains the name of the Lord.

The ASI team also found the images of Sapta Kannikas in the Cheliamman temple close to Sri Nidiswarar.

The people of Annamputhur and neighbourhood have formed a committee to collect funds for the renovation of the temple. They are in fact reconstructing the temple and would appreciate support.
