‘Prevention is better than cure’ – this book underlines this adage and gives facts to stress why it is most relevant in the use of Indian roads. Digest this: “Witnessing one in every five minutes, India is topping the world in road accidents” (Tamil Nadu, being the first) and “1,400 crores of neuron cells constitute the brain and spine.” ‘Thalaikkayam Thavirpom’ (Tamil), book released recently has many such nuggets to instil in the reader the need for safety. First-aid guidelines in the case of accidents, facing the repercussions and the role of family members during treatment are also dealt with.

Catchy chapter headings and the opening couplets add value to the book, written by Dr A.V. Srinivasan. Co-author is Lakshmi Mohan, well-known as a writer on medical literature, and as a music therapist for children with autism.

It is a big plus that even complex matters have been presented in a simple manner that can be understood by high school students, one of the target groups. It is therefore a must in every house and schools should encourage students to read it. Perhaps colourful illustrations would have enhanced the appeal of this immensely useful book, priced at Rs. 100.
