Silk in all its hues from across the country is on show at the Hastashilipi Silk India expo, Apart from Kanchipuram, Benarasi, Paithani, Uppada, Pochampalli, Dharmavaram, Dhakai, Eri, Muga…saris in all the traditional varieties make-up the collection at Valluvar Kottam (up to May 29). Behind each creation in silk lies the unmatched skill of the weavers. Ubaidur Rehman, who hails from Benaras belongs to a family that weaves Jamavar and Tanchoi saris. He has revived the Mughal art, seen on a beige sari with gold butties and rich Jamavar pallu at the expo.

For the 2,500 and more weavers in and around Uppada, weaving a traditional sari is a creative challenge. Veteran Venkata Subba Rao’s Uppada saris woven in the ikkat technique as well as his Kora saris in jewel tones stand out at the expo.
