U.S. firm to train engg students

In an effort to make students industry-ready, B.S. Abdur Rahman University has entered into an agreement with RevaturePRO, an American company, to provide training in software to its students.

The workforce development training programme aims at giving students a real time exposure to the industry when they are in their fourth year. The students will receive 15 months of training which will prepare them for work immediately upon employment, without the initial company training.

N. Senthil Kumar, India director of the company, says that with their experience in the U.S., it was a logical step to tap the potential in India. The company has set up an e-learning portal which is now used by around 40,000 students in the U.S., he adds.

Interestingly, the portal itself was designed and developed in India and continues to receive technical support from the country.

Training programme

Revature has now entered into an agreement with three institutions, including JPR College of Engineering and Chennai Institute of Technology.

The programme at B.S.A. Rahman University is a pilot programme for which third-year students will be selected through a written test. The test will evaluate the students’ skill in computing. “An average knowledge of computing is enough to qualify for the programme which will initially be free of cost,” says Senthil. The programme aims at training 10,000 students next year.

During the training, students are expected to learn for 15 hours per week. In the fourth year, they will be exposed to a project. Placement would be available in any of the 20 clients Revature has in India.

S. Mohamed Tajudeen, university director for training and placements, said the training programme would be launched on June 15. “Being a deemed university, we have the freedom to launch new programmes. Students from computer science, information technology and MCA have been taken in for the programme.

There was a personal interview with each student. Students from ECE, E&I and EEE have also been recruited. Mechanical engineering students with good knowledge have been included, too,” he said.
