Educational institutions in Manipur, closed since September, reopened today in Manipur valley districts after a four-month shutdown.
Reports from educational institutions said schools and colleges had started functioning from yesterday in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishenpur and Thoubal districts in the valley following an agreement reached between the State government and Apunba Lup (AL), a conglomerate of several social organisations, on January 8.
The AL and some student groups launched a stir over the killing of 28-year-old youth Chungkham Sanjit by police commandos in a “fake gunfight” in July last year leading to the closure of schools. The AL was supported by All Manipur Students’ Union, Manipuri Students’ Federation and Kangleipak Students’ Association in their boycott call.
The social organisations were demanding among other things exemplary action against senior police officials responsible for the deployment of commandos.
According to the agreement, the AL decided to suspend their stir for sometime after the government agreed to release without any condition all persons detained in connection with the stir protesting the shootout that killed Chungkham Sanjit and seven-month pregnant Rabina Devi apart from injuring five others.
