Q & A

December 07, 2014 07:07 pm | Updated 07:07 pm IST

My daughter is doing her three-year B.A. (Sociology-Psychology-English). After graduation, she wishes to pursue Master’s (and later Ph.D.) in English Literature in the U.S.

However, most U.S. universities need a 4-year undergrad study.

Are there U.S. universities which accept students for the Master’s programme (or an integrated Ph.D.) with a 3-year undergraduation degree? What are your recommendations for her to do Master’s in India/Europe? She would like to do her Ph.D. in the U.S.

The norms fixed by the U.S. academic systems need to be adhered to. On completion of B.A., she should pursue a one-year Diploma programme in a related area viz., literature, media. This will help her to meet the eligibility criterion.

The other option is to pursue the two-year M.A. in English/English Literature in institutions such as the English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) ( >www.elfuniversity.ac.in ),

Hyderabad, which will ensure an advantage. The programmes at EFLU have an international repute, hence, it would be an advantage for your daughter.

When applying to Universities in the U.S., ensure that:

The University matches her academic background.

The application package has all inputs that will convince the

University authorities.

Provide relevant scores and recommendations that will convince the University authorities about her being good and fit for the particular environment.

The following two programmes are conducted on campus and are very popular: Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM), Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) ( >www.iimahd.ernet.in ).

Post-Graduate programmes in Rural Management (PGDRM), and Development, Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) ( >www.irma.ac.in ), Anand.

Placements are good in both institutes.

I want to pursue Six Sigma training and certification. I have been browsing the websites of various organisations but I am not convinced about the accreditation.

Can you provide information as to where I could get the best of education and value for money?

Is a tie-up with our organisation feasible? Please provide a list of consulting firms.
