I am writing to ask your suggestions on courses in animation/graphic design. My brother would be completing 12th boards next year and is contemplating a career in animation. As far as I have researched, NID seems to be the best for communication design. Could you please shed some light on this course, institutes and entrance exams (they seem to be a lot different in comparison to the normal exams)?

The National Institute of Design (NID) (www.nid.edu) was established in 1961 to cater to academics in the design sector. The mandate for NID is to offer world-class design education, promote design awareness and application and create design professionals of excellence.

The institute functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. NID is recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.

NID offers a Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) and a Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (PGDPD) in the areas of Communication Design, Industrial Design, and Textile and Apparel Design.

Considering that NID is the best in the aspect of design, you should make all-out efforts to join it. For more details you will have to contact the Office of the Registrar (Academics), NID, Ahmedabad. Ph: 079-26623462. Email: admissions@nid.edu

I would like to learn the violin and classical guitar in typical western classical style. Is there any university, institute or college that can provide me an opportunity to study for any programme and get a certification? I am currently studying for graduation. I want to learn and not necessarily have a career in the field of music.

Anil Sahu, Bangalore

The Bangalore School of Music (BSM) (estbd. 1987) (www.thebsm.org) has established itself as a centre of excellence in the field of music. It has created a niche for itself through music education (western music), concerts, and symposia, which have attracted individuals (and families) from different walks of life. BSM offers training and learning in various instruments in the genre of keys, strings and wind. The well-qualified faculty members who specialise in various instruments are always there to support the learner.

BSM ensures that students are able to appear for the examinations of Trinity College and Royal Schools of Music, London Board and the Progressive Music Examinations. With these qualifications there are opportunities for a flying career in the field of music.

You can connect to BSM at No. 8, CBI Main Road, HMT-HBCS Layout, RT Nagar, Bangalore-560032. Ph: 23536090. Email: thebsm87@gmail.com

I have completed M.Tech through distance and off-campus programme from a deemed university and I am presently working in an IT firm. My B.Tech was done on a regular basis and I have a score of 79. I have worked on various projects for my organisation.

I realised that with a research degree I will be in a better position to get to consulting. I was checking on the Net and came across the Indian Institute of Space Science in Kerala. Could you please provide inputs about the research programme of the organisation?

Sai Prakash via email

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) (www.iist.ac.in) is a Department of Space institution and has been declared a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act of 1956. It offers Ph.D. in the areas of Aerospace Engineering, Avionics Engineering, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Physics. Since you have not specified your area of specialisation/faculty, we will not be able guide you on the pertinent nuances of the area of study that you can undertake.

You can write to the Administrative Officer, IIST, Valiamala Post, Thiruvananthapuram-695547. The Ph.D. programme is campus-based and hence you will have to move out of your job or take a sabbatical and make efforts.

I am in first PUC. I have an interest in Law but have not made up my mind to pursue it. Considering that I am in the Science stream (PCME), I think I can take a decision at the earliest. Please help me to understand the system of Law education in India or Karnataka. How are the opportunities in the field?

Abbas Ali, Bangalore

Law falls under the facet of professional studies. There are various programmes on offer:

Three-year Law degree after graduation (LL.B.)

Five-year Law degree after PUC (B.A./BBA-LL.B.)

Post-graduation in Law – LL.M.

Doctorate – Ph.D.

Some Universities also offer post-doctoral fellowships

The Bar Council of India (BCI) (www.barcouncilofindia.org) has ensured quality in legal education and we get the best brains to manage the legal systems of the country. There are many Universities that offer courses for those who have cleared Intermediate (PUC) and equivalent.

Taking up the CLAT, the admission test for admission to Law Universities, and getting a good rank will help you to get into the best of Law Universities. Considering that you will complete PUC in 2015, you would have looked at the alternatives available. Hence discuss with your parents and college counsellors and take an erudite decision on what you would like to pursue on completion of PUC.

A majority of learners who complete LL.B. focus on practising in courts or in a legal firm. A few pursue LL.M., wherein they get to specialise in various aspects. LL.M. and a Ph.D. are required to pursue the profession of a faculty member and a researcher. On completion of LL.M., one can get to specialised practice with a law firm.

The five-year law programme in India has brought about a sea change in Legal Studies. The facets of moot court, internship, legal writing, drafting and conveyance have ensured that the students get to understand the nuances in a much better manner.

Some of the Universities and Institutes even have speed reading programmes, which will help in the career. It has been observed that practice in courts or a firm will help one be a better teacher as one gets to the issues of law in a dynamic manner.

Besides the traditional areas of Criminal and Civil Practice, more and more students of Law have taken up practice in the areas of Patents, Copyrights, Cyber Law, Immigration, Corporate Law, and Business Law, to mention a few. Today, the corporate world provides enough opportunities.
