The Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers' Association (MUTA) has urged the Tamil Nadu Government to reject the recommendation of Dr.V.C.Kulandaisamy Committee on upgradation of Government and aided colleges into unitary universities. In a press statement here on Saturday, S.Vivekanandan, MUTA general secretary, said that “it was shocking to know that the committee had recommended upgradation of 150 colleges in to unitary universities.”
He said that MUTA firmly believes that the stated aim of achieving 20 per cent Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education by year 2020 cannot be achieved through private unitary universities. “The Government should reject the recommendation as its implementation will totally derail the policy of reservation pursued in Tamil Nadu for the past six decades.”
Mr. Vivekanandan said that private unitary universities will not help improve either the quality or quantity of higher education in the State.
