June 04, 2010 12:47 am | Updated 12:48 am IST - CHENNAI:

The father of an applicant for MBBS course in JIPMER, Puducherry, has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the institute authorities to follow a transparent process in conducting the entrance examination.

He has prayed the court to make available the question paper as well as the duplicate/photocopy of the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) coding sheet, and publication of the answer key and calling of objections pertaining to answer keys before publishing the test scores and ranking. The entrance examination is to be held on June 6. The petitioner, M. Bala Soudarssanane of Puducherry, said he was working as Professor and Head of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine in JIPMER. The institute Dean had been openly hostile towards him. The entrance examination is to be conducted under the direct supervision and control of the Dean.

The petitioner said his daughter Abhirami is to appear for the entrance examination.

He apprehended that his daughter may be victimised by the Dean when she appeared for the entrance examination.

In the counter affidavit, filed through JIPMER counsel, M.T. Arunan, Director K.S.V.K. Subba Rao said the OMR code sheets were introduced to improve the system of conducting the entrance examination to avoid manipulation and make the evaluation process error-free.

Improvement in conducting the entrance examination was being undertaken periodically to make the selection process transparent and avoid malpractices/impersonation of candidates or candidates adopting unfair means to secure admission. So far not a single episode had been reported regarding any error/wrong doing in the conduct/evaluation of MBBS entrance examination. The matter has been adjourned after two weeks.
