Manufacturing and service industries have changed drastically in modern times due to the explosion in the knowledge economy and innovation through disruptive technologies. It is because of these conditions that academic areas like Mathematics which were hitherto considered as traditional, have come to the forefront along with scientific computing to support the organisations of today in qualitative decision-making abilities. Industrial Mathematics is a branch of applied mathematics which includes theoretical topics such as economics, computer science, physics and even biology.

Industrial Mathematics supports problem-solving mechanism in the most efficient manner. On the other hand scientific computing, also referred to as computation science, support the construction of mathematical models and quantitative analysis techniques, besides the usage of computers to analyse and solve issues that are scientific in nature.

Computer simulation is the key to ensure good decision making. The organisations of today rely heavily on Mathematics and scientific computing for the automobiles, textiles, design of aircrafts, computer, managing large data bases, data mining, to mention a few. The Graduation and Post-Graduation qualifications that you have already attained along with MTech will support you to consult in various segments viz., Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI), software industries, and even the Government through the planning mechanism. Besides the above, one gets an opportunity to take up the domain of research and teaching in leading academic institutions.

Some of the institutions where you can pursue MTech and PhD in the areas mentioned are:

1. Department of Mathematics, IIT Chennai, Chennai (www.iitm.ac.in).

2. Department of Mathematics, IISc, Bengaluru (www.iisc.ernet.in).

3. Department of Mathematics, University of Pune, Pune (www.unipune.ac.in).

4. Kuvempu University, Shivamogga (www.kuvempu.ac.in).

I am a final year student of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. I am confused what to do after graduation. I am good at Software and Embedded programming. I want to do a job related to people, where I can work for them. Sometimes I think about UPSC, but the path is too risky. I am thinking of joining an IT company and after three years switch to PG overseas or study for UPSC. Please help in my choice.

The normal progression for a technology graduate is to move to a corporate firm and start a career. But there are some who prepare for higher studies (MTech/ME) in India or overseas. The Civil Services and the various Engineering Services examinations are good options that engineers have, considering the fact that technology graduates have fared very well in these competitive examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). There have been cases where engineers have qualified for the CSE and various other engineering services after having joined the corporate world. Once in the Services, you get many opportunities to pursue higher studies as a Civil Servant not only in India but overseas as well. Hence, preparing for the various UPSC examinations for 12 to 18 months will surely help you.

I completed BTech (Electronics and Communication) in 2014 and am working for an Indian MNC. I would like to pursue a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Technology. Could you suggest the best options to pursue this study?

I have completed BA with Sociology as one of the majors. I am currently working for a couple of NGOs as a consultant. Can you provide details of any affiliate college with the Bangalore University where I can pursue Master’s and subsequently research degree in Social Work?

via email

You should contact Fr. Josekutty, Principal, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous) (1999) (Grade A, NAAC accreditation) (www.kristujayanti.edu.in), K. Narayanapura, Kothanur Post, Bengaluru-560077. Ph: 28465611. Email: principal@kristujayanti.edu.in for the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme which is conducted through the Department of Social Work (2003) on the college premises. The learners have ample opportunities for practical sessions and interaction with the outside world which will help them to acclimatise with the nuances of the subject. The Ph.D. in Social Work is another feather in the cap for Kristu Jayanti College, which is recognised as a research centre in this field by Bangalore University since 2007.

I am currently pursuing BE in Electronics and Communications. What are the opportunities I will have on completing the programme and what is the best course to take for PG?

via email, Bengaluru

Complete the BE programme with the best possible score, and pursue a final project that will get a dream job. Pursue PG if you want to take up teaching and research assignments. The best PG that you can pursue would be in your area of specialisation or one that has an interdisciplinary approach that will link to the graduate programme of study. However, at this juncture, getting through campus placements once you complete the degree programme is the best that you can do for yourself.

I am in the IT MNC corporate for about five years now, and have been planning to pursue MBA from a good B-school. I have contacted my HR for in-house programmes, but at the University they have given me I did not like the programmes. I have started liking Economics and my aim is to pursue MSQE (Masters of Science in Quantitative Economics) from ISI (Indian Statistical Institute). Can you suggest the right course?

via email, Bengaluru

MBA programmes are available with all good universities, autonomous institutes that cater to the AICTE-recognised Diploma programmes and even the IIMs. However, the study of Economics will only be a minor area in most of the MBA programmes. Considering that you have an interest in Economics, it is advisable you pursue the same in an institution of repute.

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) (www.isibang.ac.in), found by the well know scientist and applied statistician, P.C. Mahalanobis, has its headquarters in Kolkata and subsidiary centres in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Tezpur, besides Statistical Quality Control and operations research centres in Vadodara, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune. The Master of Science in Quantitative Economics (MS-QE) programme of ISI has been considered a good break in the academic, research and corporate arena. You will have to check with the institute as to when the course will be offered and pursue it on a regular basis.

Another institution worth considering is the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) (www.econdse.org), which is a centre of postgraduate education of the University of Delhi. DSE conducts the popular and well acclaimed MA in Economics. Both the programmes have to be pursued on a regular basis, and you will have to take a sabbatical to pursue the same.
