Meeting: Psychiatrist S. Srinivas Bhat of K.S. Hegde Hospital, Deralakatte, has said that parents must spend time with their children, talk to them and respond to their emotions and feelings to understand children better and reduce their stress.

He was addressing a gathering at the Parent-Teacher Association meeting at Besant Women’s College, Mangalore.

Dr. Bhat said that parents should also explain to the children about life’s difficulties and teach them how to have control over their demands. Damayanti was elected president of the association on the occasion.

Workshop: Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore, with the State government’s Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC) organised a one-day workshop on international trade on the campus. Shaner, professor, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, who inaugurated it explained various facets of international trade. Mohd. Shareef, Deputy Director of VTPC, and Prasanna Srinivasan, senior consultant in international trade at VTPC, were the resource persons. The workshop dealt with WTO and international trade; procedure and formalities of export; and international framework in international trade. Sixty students and 20 faculty members from colleges in Mangalore attended it.

Conference on communication: Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, recently organised a conference on ‘Advances in communication and signal processing’.

Muralidhar Kulkarni, professor in ECE, Department of National Institute of Technology-Karnataka, Surathkal, inaugurated it. He suggested that teachers from foreign universities could be invited for delivering lectures.

Competition: Laxmi Memorial College of Hotel Management, Mangalore, organised a rangoli competition for pre-university students. A team of Shaaryl D’Souza, Anaika Lobo and Neha Mulge from St. Agnes Pre-University College, Mangalore, bagged the first prize.

Swathi Acharya, Bindushree and Swathi from Sri Rama Pre-University College, Kalladka, won the second prize and the third prize was won by Vijaya Krishna of MGM College, Udupi.

NAAC team: A three-member peer team of the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) visited Srinivas Institute of Management Studies, Mangalore, recently and assessed the infrastructure, academic activities and facilities provided to students and staff. The team interacted with teachers, students, parents, management team and old students.
