Business administration festival: The Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru, will organise ‘Fete-Foraine’, a festival of undergraduate students, on February 12 on the campus. Students of undergraduate colleges of any discipline can participate in this competition. Seminar: The Director of Prasaranga, Mysuru University, C. Naganna, has said that vernacular languages should be strengthened to face the threat from English.
He was delivering the valedictory address at a two-day seminar on ‘Knowledge text translation in Kannada’ at Mangalore University. The National Translation Mission under the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru, and S.V. Parmeshwara Bhatta Institute of Kannada Studies, Mangalore University, have organised the seminar.
Mr. Nagannna said that once Latin was a powerful language. But English became a strong language during the colonial period. It was sad that Indian historians gave importance to the thoughts of colonialism and ignored knowledge texts. Historians of the present too have ignored knowledge texts and have given importance to art and literature.

Health awareness: The first year degree students of Home Science, Besant Women’s College, conducted a health awareness programme at Mannagudda Primary School, Mangalore, recently.
Students taught the children about dietary habits and maintaining personal hygiene through skits, charts, etc. Children enjoyed the nutritionally rich recipes prepared at the venue. Asha Rai, head of the department, was the coordinator of the programme.
Sports meet: Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology (NMAMIT), Nitte, organised its annual sports meet recently. Jerald S. D’Souza, Deputy Director, Directorate of Physical Education, Mangalore University, was the guest. Addressing students he asked them to engage in sports activities which would help them both physically and mentally.
Niranjan N. Chiplunkar, principal of the college, asked students to make best use of sports facilities in the college. In all, 26 sports competitions had been organised.
Visit: Sreenivasa Ramanujam, Academic Relationship Manager-Karnataka, TCS, visited Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering, Moodbidri, recently. He interacted with students and gave them insights into current industrial trends.
He gave a presentation on the requirements of an engineering student to join the industry. He presented his views not only on technical aspects but also on the other important requirements such as grooming, communication, and soft skills. G.L. Easwara Prasad, Principal, welcomed the gathering.
Recognition to MITE: Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering (MITE), Moodbidri, has been recognised by Micorosoft as a MEC community partner for its participation in the MEC drive conducted in December, 2014. MEC is a community initiative by Microsoft Research designed to bring the highest quality classroom material to every undergraduate engineering student in India. MEC is geared to be a fun, social and interactive learning place for students and teachers.
The recognition was conferred at Microsoft Research India’s annual research symposium at Bengaluru on January 23.
Microsoft Research conducted an online registration drive for MEC in December, 2014, and the top five colleges in the country were selected as MEC community partners. Under the initiative, students from MITE will get an opportunity to interact and participate in Microsoft programmes as well as get an opportunity to undergo online classes offered by Micorosft Research. Two students of MITE — Punith Gowda and Sandeep K.R. — got an opportunity to attend the Microsoft conference held at Bhopal in December, 2014.
