I am a doctor by profession, currently working in a hospital. I want to pursue a course, without leaving my job, in the area of Medical Ethics. Is there any programme that I can attend on a part-time basis and get to know the subject well? I do not mind a one- or two-year programme.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) ( >www.nls.ac.in ) conducts the one year Post-Graduate Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics (PGDMLE) under the Distance Education Programmes (DEP) scheme. The DEP have been designed to empower the learners to expand and deepen their legal knowledge in a globalised world. The programmes do not have any age barrier. The PGDMLE offers courses such as Law and Health, an introduction to systems; Health Law and Ethics, constitutional and legal perspective; Medical professional, patient and the law; and Professional accountability and patient’s rights, besides a mandatory dissertation that has to be submitted prior to taking up the examination.

For details you should contact the Coordinator, Distance Education Department (DED), NLSIU, Nagarbhavi, Bangalore-560072. Ph: 23160532-35. Fax: 23160534. Email: ded@nls.ac.in

NLSIU offers the two-year Master of Business Laws (MBL) which is the flagship programme under the distance mode. PG Diploma in Human Rights Law, Environmental Law, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Law, Child Rights Law, Consumer Law and Practice, and Cyber Law and Cyber Forensics are on offer.

The programmes have been well received by the learners and the industry too appreciates the inputs that have been provided over a period of time.

I have completed PUC second year with 63 per cent marks and I have been working as an assistant in a school. I am interested in pursuing the Bachelor course in Physical Education. Am I eligible? I have been an athlete all through my life.

The eligibility criteria varies for the Bachelor in Physical Education (BPd) (one-year) and Diploma in Physical Education (DPd) (two-years). For the BPd one should have completed graduation with a minimum of 40 per cent marks. Those who have completed Plus 2 (Pre-University) with 50 per cent marks are eligible for the DPd.

One of the oldest and better known institutions in Bangalore is the YMCA College for Physical Education (1958), which has created a niche for itself over a period of time. The YMCA (www.ymcablr.net) conducts the BPd and the DPd programmes, and the sessions commence in August/September of each year.
