Career advice: As the nation’s economy is witnessing changes and growth, the career opportunities in various sectors are growing by the day. Gone are the days when attractive career opportunities were confined to technical and medical courses only. The changes have impacted the job market so much so that openings even for the traditional courses like commerce have tremendously increased. But, most of the students fail to tap the opportunity due to lack of awareness.

A special talk on ‘Career in banking and insurance sector’ organised jointly by the Anjuman Arts, Science and Commence College and Post-Graduate Centre and The Hindu BusinessLine on the college premises here on Thursday proved to be useful in sensitising the commerce students about various attractive career opportunities. Venkat Satish, Director, Karnataka School of Banking, Hubli, not only provided correct information but also gave useful tips on how to prepare for the examination.

Mr. Satish said along with good pay structure, a banking professional could get quick promotions. It was the only sector where a person joining as clerk could aspire to become the chairman. The examination consists of tests of reasoning, English knowledge, numerical ability, general awareness and computer knowledge. All these topics were totally different from what the students learn in academics. Hence, students from all academic disciplines could enter this sector with proper studies and preparation, he said.

Expansion of the banking and insurance sector and large number of retirements in the near future would create several job openings. If the college students start preparations along with regular studies, it would be easier to make a career in banking or insurance, he said.

The college principal Sophia Pathan, PG programme coordinator N.M. Makandar and others spoke.
