My father is being posted to Hyderabad in the beginning of 2015. I am completing +2 in 2015 and would be joining my family by April. I want to pursue Bachelor in Hospitality and Tourism Management on campus. Please guide me.

via email, Bangalore

The YSR National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (YSR NITHM) (www.nithm.ac.in) (estbd. in 2004) has created a niche for itself in a short span of time. It is located in Hyderabad and has been promoted by the Central and State Governments.

It offers programmes at the Bachelor and Master degree level. Those with +2/PUC/Intermediate can apply for Bachelor of Business Administration (Tourism and Hospitality) (four-year) and Bachelor of Science (Hospitality and Hotel Administration) (three-year). These programmes are job oriented and there is good demand for those who complete them.

The Institute also offers MBA in Hospitality and MBA in Tourism and Hospitality, besides Post-Graduate Diploma programmes in Heritage Conservation and Management. The BBA and MBA programmes are affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, whilst the B.Sc programme is affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Tourism.

The Institute also runs an autonomous two-year Post-Graduate programme in Tourism Management which is recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). You should contact the Institute at: YSR-NITHM, Telecom Nagar, Gachibowli, Hyderabad-500032. Ph: 040-23000472.

The Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) (www.ihmhyd.org), under the aegis of the State Technical Department and sponsored by the Government of India and the State Government, is another centre of excellence where you can pursue studies in the domain of hospitality and tourism. The flagship programmes are the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Hotel Administration and Master of Science in Hospitality and Hotel Administration. You will have to take the all-India test for the same.

Based on the plan that you have envisaged you should contact the Principal, IHM, F-Row, DD Colony, Vidyanagar, Hyderabad-500 007. Ph: 040-27427569. Email: ihmhyd.principal@gmail.com

We belong to a farming community and are currently engaged in farming and agriculture. This has influenced our children who are keen to pursue courses in Environment and Ecology and Wildlife and Wildlife Management. My elder daughter will be joining PUC in

2015 after completion of 10th (State Board) Standard and is keen to pursue the programmes. Please give inputs that will help in understanding the scope of the study area and the opportunities that are available. I am under the impression that the scope lies only in the non-governmental sector.

Following the completion of +2 in the Science stream, which in your case will be 2015, you should take up B.Sc in Zoology as one of the majors and ensure eligibility for the programmes related to wildlife as you proceed to postgraduation.

Considering the specialised nature of the programme that you would like to opt for, you should stay oriented, as these are long-term propositions that focus on the aspect of research. A mere graduation in the area that you would like to major will not suffice.

One of the best options that you should consider for postgraduate studies would be the Master of Science in Wildlife Biology and Conservation which is conducted in collaboration between the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) (www.ncbs.res.in) and the Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS). The M.Sc degree is awarded by TIFR (TATA Institute of Fundamental Research).

The programme has been appreciated for the inputs and the benefits that it brings to the learner.

You should not stop with the M.Sc, but continue to pursue Ph.D., which will bring you in connect with the realities of the world of wildlife. One aspect that one should bear in mind is the impact on one’s life, considering the fact that field work becomes the order of the day; and there are experts who have spent years on the field to ensure capture of the details that would impact one and all.

You can pursue B.Sc from any of the colleges offering the three-year science programme with a focus on Zoology.

For M.Sc and further research programmes with CWS, visit the website and you can also connect to the institute at NCBS, GKVK, Bellary Road, Bangalore-560065.

Considering that wildlife conservation is the domain of the government at the federal and State levels, the Forest Departments in the States ensure protection as per the policy directives.

The opportunities that the Forest Departments provide are through the recruitment of officers to the forest service through the Public Service Commissions (viz., KPSC in Karnataka), and the Indian Forest Service (IFS), where recruitments are conducted through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This apart, there are many NGOs who have been supporting the conservation efforts in the Forest Department with élan.

I am in B.Sc second year in the domain of CBZ. I want details of JNCASR and the contact address.
