The need to make a choice what career one picks for life is very important because it defines the rest of your life and the choice should be made carefully so that a person can enjoy their career throughout without any regrets of what might have been.

The transitional phase from school to college is the most crucial. It is very important for a student to pick what caters best to their individual abilities and not get bogged down by the people around them influencing into making what may be a wrong choice. Mohammed Mazharuddin, final year BE (EEE) student of Osmania University says, “when I joined engineering there was a fad around it. If it wasn't for the craze with everyone pushing me to do it, I would have chosen to be a CA (Chartered Accountant), which was my prime interest.”

Thankfully the education scene has seen a change in trends in recent years from the focus slowly shifting from science to arts.

This trend has changed as the industries based on science have met their requirement of professionals and there now is job shortage where as the fields based on Arts are steadily flourishing with the job prospects being much brighter.

Salima Khetani, a HR Post Graduate Student of St.Francis says, “when I was making my career choice many advised me to take science which was the trend then. But I was not interested as I felt the students from the science streams were becoming clones of one another and so I stuck to my decision of picking arts over science.”

The stream which is neutral is the field of Commerce which has seen a steady range of students picking it as a career choice over the years because it has a reputation of being a safe stream with most having an assured job.

There are many who are unable to pick between science and Arts as both are equally important. One such student who found a course which balances Arts and science is Vivek Rangabhashyam, a student of B.Sc Animation of Loyola Academy who says, “the course I picked is both creative as well as scientific.

This is a great balance for me as I get to work both with technology and also have the opportunity to be creative.”

Many a times a student might realise in their Intermediate or 11 and 12 that they made the wrong choice.

If the interest is towards Arts then the mistake can be easily rectified at the college-level by picking a course that interests them. But if the need is to jump from Arts to science then it is not possible and often this is where Arts is at an advantage.

Anusha.N an MBA student of CSI says, “I shifted from commerce in my Intermediate to Arts in degree college as I realised that I had an inclination towards it and thankfully I managed to rectify my choice. I enjoyed studying arts and also like management as I am pursuing an MBA currently.”

It would be best to make the final call on your career choice after careful thinking as an error of judgement might not easily be rectified.

With the plethora of career options available today, from event management, photo-journalism, corporate communication, gemmology, travel planning and the works, the list is endless.

All it needs is to find what interests you so that you will have a great time as you study and work ahead.
