After two decades of teaching marketing to the corporates, D. Hariharaputhran is taking the message to small traders. What he’s teaching them include how to procure materials, publicise products and use online resources to promote their businesses.

“Every individual should look at what he gives to society. At this stage of life, I am looking at the satisfaction I can get helping small traders in their business,” says 75-year-old Hariharaputhran, marketing director of a paint company and a resident of Dr. Ranga Road in Mylapore.

Small enterprises such as Kirana shops and tailoring units are his focus.

Participants are given marketing inputs through a day-long workshop at his home at Dr. Ranga Road in Mylapore, where talks of well-known speakers and success stories such as Wallmart and Marks & Spencer will be brought live through a huge projector.

Madhurai-based R. Gopalsamy, a yoga teacher with over 20 years experience, will share his inputs on yoga exercise for success in sales via skype.

“Classes are held on Saturday and I do not exceed more than 10 participants,” says the certified trainer in Law of Attraction (LOA).

Hariharaputhran took an early retirement from Nerolac Paints to start Pride Academy for Selling Excellence where he has trained employees of companies such as Pepsi, Zenith Hardwares, Frooti and Berger Paints.

“It is only a question of wanting to do things and one must plunge into what the heart say,” he says, lacing his conversation with anecdotes of his life.

He also wants to offer free computer classes to senior citizens.
