An Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) retail outlet of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), located near Tambaram Sanatorium Railway Station-Subway, is proving to be a nuisance to the public.

People are upset that no steps have been taken to have it shifted out of the area, despite repeated appeals from them. Customers to the liquor outlet park their cycles, two-wheelers and cars in a haphazard manner in front of the shop as no space has been allotted for parking. It is also the place where vehicles take a u-turn on this one way stretch and is a pick-up/drop point for IT techies and BPO professionals. “A good part of the space required for vehicles to comfortably take u-turn is occupied by these vehicles, hindering free flow of traffic on both sides of Railway Border Road, Tambaram Sanatorium. “Vehicular traffic moves slowly for hours in the evening due to the haphazard parking,” R. Sowmya, a resident of Sanatorium, and an IT professional said. “At any point of the day, tipplers stand outside the outlet and engage in arguments with their mates and use foul language. This problem escalates in the late evenings, when more patrons come to the TASMAC shop. They consume alcohol in the open much to the discomfort of pedestrians,” she added.

“Quarrels among drunkards have become a regular affair at the entrance of the shop,” said another resident. A resident of Chitlapakkam said that these men tease women and girls when they pass by.

The shop is an inconvenience to the public, especially women and senior citizens and should be shifted out, she added.
