Stringer Street

This stretch is lined with shops selling shoes and bags. Many of the shops take up customised orders from schools.

“We print the school logo and the design they want for the bag,” says Mohammed, manager, New Jothis Bag Mall. This season, the shop received orders from around 30 schools and has designed nearly 5,000 bags.

Bags made of nylon and completed with matte finish are the most sought-after; they range from Rs. 100 to Rs. 1,500.

However, not all bag sellers at Stringer Street look happy.

A majority of them are not getting the regular number of customers as the State government supplies school bags to all government schools. “When the government is providing free bags for students, how can we expect good sales?” says Charles, a bag shop owner.

Over 20 footwear shops are located on the stretch.

Kasi Setty Street

This street is famous for plastic items and, when it comes to school students, it has an impressive variety of water bottles and tiffin boxes to offer. Water bottles and tiffin boxes bearing images of cartoon characters like Chotta Bheem, Dora and minions are a big attraction.

Bunder Street

Picture charts, labels, brown sheets and pencil pouches are some of the most purchased items on this stretch. Shopping here requires a lot of patience. Apart from institutions, many parents come here to shop in bulk. Although some schools supply notebooks, there are many parents who buy in bulk so that their wards can use them as rough notes.

“I come here to purchase books and stationeries for my children as they are affordable,” says Kanthimathi, a homemaker.
