The Pallavapuram Municipality has set July as the deadline for all households and public buildings to keep infrastructure ready to harvest rainwater during the monsoon that is to follow.
As part of the measures, it is taking a series of steps including de-silting, deepening, and recharging over 60 public wells, which come under its jurisdiction.
Apart from this, the Municipality is leaving no stone unturned in creating awareness about the importance of collecting and storing rainwater for productive use. It has been addressing school students, residents’ welfare associations in Pallavaram and Chromepet through street plays and posters, official sources said.
The officials have also been inspecting houses under construction to check if they have installed RWH facilities. At present, work on cleaning the inlet and outlet channel of the water bodies is proceeding at a brisk pace. In the days to come, the water bodies will be de-silted and deepened, which will help recharge the ground water.
The RWHS has already been implemented in municipal and private schools, hospitals and some private buildings. The officials have also asked building contractors to come up with plans that would accommodate a RWH facility.
The advantage of RWH is that it helps recharge ground water level, improve the quality of water and prevent sea water from intruding into the water table, the officials said.
