For residents of K.K. Nagar, Dr. Natesan Street is an analogue of Boat Club area. With avenue trees providing prefect shade on this street, walkers from nearby streets flock to it every morning and evening. As vehicular traffic is low on this stretch, it is clam. Now, an additional feature is making the street even more attractive: few benches have been provided on the pavement along the street. Six to seven concrete seats have been placed on one side of the road for walkers to rest.
“We placed the seats a few months ago, after the construction of granite pavements. Here, people start walking as early as 4 a.m. LED lights have also been installed on the street,” says M. Gunasekaran, councillor, ward 131.
“The benches are primarily aimed at walkers, but, in the afternoon, people, especially roadside vendors, can be seen sleeping,” says Kannan, a resident.
Just as in Boat Club area, high profile people, including elected representatives and government officials, can be seen taking a walk on this street. The Central government staff quarters is situated on the road.
There is a plan to develop the parallel Patrol Salai on the same pattern as Dr. Natesan Salai.
“Under the car-free road initiative, we are planning to re-lay the platform with granite and also provide benches, a projector, a screen and other amenities. The plan awaits approval,” says Gunasekaran.
