The next time you are at the MRTS station at Kasturbai Nagar or Chintadripet, take a few seconds to read the notices stuck in huge font on glass windows and near the ticket counter.
This is an initiative by R. Vijayarajan, chief commercial inspector, Southern Railway.
He came up with the captions before the ‘Swatchh Bharath’ campaign, which was carried out at all the zones of the Railways on October 2.
‘East or west, cleanliness is best’, ‘Operation of cleanliness with cooperation of public’ and ‘Solution for pollution is cleanliness’ are some of the captions.
Whether passengers care to read or not, Vijayarajan thinks he is at least making people think before they litter the station premises.
“At Thiruvanmiyur station, the posters that I stuck were torn in a few days,” he says, adding I plan to create more awareness this way.
Thiruvanmiyur station now gets new LED lights

The poorly-lit Thiruvanmiyur station is now aglow after employees of Ramanujan IT City at Taramani and Mindtree decided to give it some life. On October 11, nearly 500 volunteers spruced up the station and gave it a fresh coat of paint. The campaign continued up to October 15 where the companies sponsored LED lights that were fitted along the entire stretch of both platforms.
“Nearly 40,000 employees are going to work at the SEZ, which has 20 companies and over 12,000 employees currently. A good number of them use the MRTS and we also wanted this mode of transport to get popular, so we decided to do our bit for the station,” said an official. This is just the start. If more corporates pitch in, other MRTS stations can be spruced up.
