T henmerku Paruvakkaatru, produced by Jotham Media Works, with its mother sentiment makes a mark among films with rural themes.
After his maiden outing, Koodal Nagar , director Seenuramasamy returns to tell the story of Veerayi (Saranya) and her son Murugan (Vijay Sethupathy) who live in a village in Theni. It is a struggle for Veerayi to make ends meet. Murugan idles away his time drinking with his friends. His mother fixes his marriage with his cousin. One day, thieves try to steal their goats and in the ensuing struggle, Murugan manages to catch one of them. When he learns that the thief is not a man but a woman, Murugan lets her go. He goes in search of her and finds her, Pecchi (Vasundara), in a nearby village.
Both fall for each other. Veerayi gets to know about this. How does she react to it? The film celebrates motherhood right from the first frame. It is the role of a lifetime for Saranya Ponvannan. With more than a decade's experience behind her, Saranya plays the widowed mother convincingly. The scenes in the first half where she shows her affection for her son speak volumes for her talent. She also scores with her mastery of the Tamil dialect needed for the role. Vijay Sethupathy as Murugan excels in some scenes compared to his sweetheart in the film. Vasundara as Pecchi gets to show her talent only in the climax scenes. Theepetti Ganesan, who did a meaty role in Renigunta, plays the hero's friend and makes us smile in a few scenes. Hemalatha as Kalaichelvi is adequate. Aruldas (Mookaiyan), ‘Stills' Kumar (Marichami), ‘Kadhal' Kumar, Kambam Guna have all done their roles with ease.
When it comes to lyrics for a film with a rural theme, none other than Vairamuthu excels. The words of the songs are not only beautiful but also meaningful, particularly the song ‘Kalikaatil Porantha Thayie', sung by Vijayprakash and Unni Menon, which touches a sentimental chord. It brings to mind the sufferings of a mother to make her son scale great heights. The music is scored by newcomer N. R. Rah Nanthan who has done a commendable job. The camera work is noteworthy, while editor Kasiviswanathan must have made better use of his scissors to speed up the pace of the film. Director Seenuramasamy's second outing certainly sustains interest.
