Money matters

Director L. Suresh's debut Tamil film, Ethan, is all about how a person survives by taking others for a ride. It stars Vimal, who, after Kalavani , takes up comedy once again, supported by Singampuli, M.S. Bhaskar and Mayilsami. “The hero is a habitual borrower. Even as he is stuck deep in a financial mess, he comes up with solutions to get out of difficult situations. One of those affected by his actions is the heroine, Sanusha. Does she reform him? Or, will be never escape the quagmire of debts? Ethan will provide the answers,” says Suresh.

High five?

She's just four films old and eagerly awaiting the response to her fifth. Piaa is thrilled with the character she's essayed in director K.V. Anand's Ko . “Compared to my earlier films, I've done something totally different in Ko ; it's very satisfying as an actor. And, though I am getting a few other offers, I'm going to wait for Ko's release, because I am aware that I work in an industry where you are only as good as your last film.” Meanwhile, Piaa is busy doing commercials — she's just completed one with Aamir Khan for Tata Sky.

Riding high

She played Nayantara's friend in the Malayalam Bodyguard . And, when director Siddique remade the movie in Tamil with Asin and Vijay ( Kaavalan ), he roped in Mitra to reprise her role as Asin's friend. Now that she's getting all the attention and offers from Tamil producers, Mitra is weighing her options. “I would like to essay powerful female characters such as those in Mynaa and Kalavani . A good friend of another Keralite, Amala Paul, Mitra is no doubt moving in the same direction!

All about relationships

Royapuram to Royapettah — that's Ra Ra , directed by Sandilya, for you! Hero Udaya's sixth film in Tamil is said to be a total entertainer with a strong streak of comedy.

Says Udaya, who's awaiting the release of Poova Thalaya : “The film is about two families living in these localities. The hero hails from one and the heroine from the other. Their humour-filled escapades, and the relationship between the two and their families, form the crux of the film.”

Swetha Basuprasad from the Telugu industry plays the heroine, while Srikanth Deva is the composer. He's said to have come up with a song using the verses of the Tirukkural.

A classic remade

After blockbusters such as Vasool Raja (Kamal Hassan) and Kutty (Dhanush), Gemini Film Circuit is back with the Tamil remake of 3 Idiots . Titled Nanban, the Shankar-directed film will star Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth in the lead. Illeana has been signed up as the heroine. Joining the cast are S.J. Suryah, Anuya and Ajay Rathinam, while lyricist Madan Karky is working on the dialogues.

Jiiva, who plays the role made popular by Sharman Joshi in the original, has just completed a 10-day shoot at Lawrence School and other locations in Ooty. Says the actor: “I was quite apprehensive before the start of the shoot, because Shankar is such a big director. But, he was so down to earth and made us all feel at ease. Actually, having worked with K.V. Anand for Ko has taught me a lot about discipline; he is such a perfectionist. It is real fun doing this film.”
