Nedunchalai

Filmgoers of the mid-Nineties would remember a sprightly teenager who did two films in Tamil and one each in Malayalam and Telugu and vanished from the scene after her marriage. Now that her three kids have grown up, Vanitha has decided to get back to the silver screen. “I know I can't run around trees any more. Our cinema has matured and there is a lot of scope for performance-oriented roles. If the script is good and there is a strong character, besides a capable director, the film is sure to attract audiences. I am fortunate to get such a role in my comeback flick,” says Vanitha, who is reluctant to reveal more details about the film which is yet to go on the floors.

Inspired by life

Who can forget director Krishna's last outing, Sillunu Oru Kaathal, starring Suriya and Jothika? Following this, Krishna has completed Yen Ippadi Mayakkinai , awaiting release, and has now launched his third film, Nedunchalai, starring Aari ( Malai Pozhudhin Mayakathile ) and Shivtha ( Living Together in Malayalam). “The story is based on a real-life incident which took place in 1985 along a highway near a suburb. I have woven a story of love and action around this incident. I have shown how life and relationships get affected when something untoward happens in a quiet locality. While I haven't yet decided to make the incident part of the film, I intend drawing similes to such happenings that greatly impact those who are present there,” says Krishna.

Just for laughs

Director Mano's claim to directing a full-length comedy, Ragalapuram , is his track record of having written as many as 30 comedy portions for Vadivelu in several of the latter's films. “The character Karunas (who produces the film) plays is compelled to join the police force though he dislikes and fears the profession. He prays that nothing dangerous or untoward happens to make him nervous. As luck would have it, on the very first day of duty, he comes across murderers, robbers and goondas. He confides in a colleague who advises him to use his wit and humour to tackle law and order situations,” says Mano. The film sees Karunas in Mr. Bean-like situations, apprehending criminals and solving crimes, which will send the audience into raptures.

Three is a crowd

Ashok ( Pidichirukku ) plays an artist whose creativity gains him immense popularity. Along comes Dharshana with whom he falls in love. But she is of the opinion that money is more important than fame and love, and leaves Ashok in the lurch. As can be expected in films, Krithika enters as the third angle in the eternal triangle. Director Tabushankar's debut film, Vekkathai Kettal Enna Tharuvai, deals with the subject of love sensibly. “When Dharshana spurns his love and walks away, Ashok falls into a deep depression. Thanks to his friend, he meets Krithika. As advised by his friend, Ashok feigns love to get Dharshana out of his mind and move on with life. He is unaware that in the process, Krithika is slowly falling in love with him, making the whole process complex. The rest of the film deals with how the three sort out their emotions and live life happily,” explains Tabushankar. Vekkathai Kettal Enna Tharuvai is ready for release this month.
