The Russian Centre of Science and Culture, Chennai, the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation and the Indo-Russian Film Club organise a Russian Film Festival to commemorate the 65{+t}{+h} anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany during World War II from May 10 to May 13 at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, Kasturi Ranga Road.
The festival opens today at 6 p.m. with the film “The Cadets”. The 180-minute film tells the story of Igor Petrenko, an officer in the Soviet army and the son of a general, is forced by his conscience to commit treason.
On May 11, “Star” (6 p.m.) and “The Italian” (7.35 p.m.) will be screened. “Star” is about a team of Soviet scouts sent behind enemy lines to find the location of German armoured forces. How they go about doing this forms a fascinating tale.
“The Italian”, set in an orphanage in rural Russia, is about an Italian couple which hopes to adopt Vanya, a charming six-year-old boy. Though it means he will be taken away from the miserable conditions of the orphanage, Vanya is desperate to find out whether or not his own mother is alive. Is he able to reunite with his mother?
On May 12, “Only Old Men are going to Battle” will be screened at 6 p.m. The “old men” in this squadron are no older than 20, and those wet behind the ears, a reinforcement fresh from flying schools with accelerated training.
Watch “You will never leave me” at 7.35 p.m. A young woman comes back from a health resort and a little later, her husband receives a card from a man she met there. Keen to know what might have happened, he decides to reply on her behalf. But the day before the expected arrival of the hero, a letter comes from the mother that her son was shot for committing sabotage.
On May 13, 6.30 p.m., “Samara Town”, follows the troubled life of fashion designer Barbara Elesin, who returns from the bright lights of Moscow to a province in search of happiness.
Barbara has fallen in love with a world famous hockey player, but shadows from her dark past threaten her bright present.
