smart and funny Monsters University

What a wonderful day at the movies this has turned out to be! While on the one screen we have Brad Pitt fighting hoards of undead, on the other we have those charming monsters Mike and Sully learning the ropes to become top scarers. Set before the events of Monsters Inc (2001), Monsters University tells how Mike Wazowski always dreamt of going to Monsters University. When he finally gets there, he realises that his dream of majoring in scaring is filled with roadblocks — including James Sullivan from the famous Sullivan family and super strict principal Dean Hardscrabble. When Mike, Sully and a group of misfits enter the Scare Games, they do not seem to have much of a chance of winning. In the classic tradition, the underdog becomes the top dog (I am not giving away plot points here) and learns important life lessons along the way.

Like its predecessor, Monsters University is smart, funny and inventive. There are thrills galore as well as funny lines and the colours are all bright and busy. While Billy Crystal as Mike, John Goodman as Sully, Steve Buscemi as Randy and Frank Oz as Jeff Fungus reprise their roles, Helen Mirren as Dean Hardscrabble and Alfred Molina as Professor Knight are the new entries. The short film, The Blue Umbrella , directed by Saschka Unseld is a delightful bonus in an already sumptuous buffet.

Genre : Animation adventure

Voice cast : Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Frank Oz, John Ratzenberger, Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina

Bottomline : A charming prequel
