If you were missing Govinda or Salman Khan from David Dhawan comedies, your wait for the next funny, dancing, fighting comic hero is over. Varun Dhawan, guided by Daddy Dhawan, steals the best from them both and makes it his own. This is no easy task.
It requires uninhibited raw energy and some amount of confidence to pull off the most outrageous of stunts, the cheesiest of lines and corniest of dance steps like it’s the best thing ever performed on screen.
Varun Dhawan is a star who shines and rises above the mediocrity of the material (written by the kids who wrote Grand Masti and a plot borrowed from the Telugu film Kandireega ) and he makes most of Main Tera Hero almost watchable.
Main Tera Hero is one of those showcase films where the boy gets to show off that he can do everything a Bollywood HERO can do — look good (six pack abs), dance like he’s on drugs, beat up the bad guys without a sweat, charm the ladies and show us his funny bone.
Like all star vehicles, whether or not you are able to sit through it, depends on your tolerance level or love for the star. Going by the girls screaming in the theatre, the boy’s at least got the basics right.
He’s likeable for sure. This Student of the Year is quick to learn the ropes and reminds us of Govinda who we miss so much and Salman Khan, who is now taking himself way too seriously as an action star. (Bhai does pitch in with a cameo as the voice of God hassled by the hero). It was a vacuum waiting to be filled and Varun is going to be in their shoes for a long time.
The rest of the film is strictly average. The girls, like most Dhawan heroines, have very little to do but play damsels in distress and wear designer clothes. It is the unintended laughs that entertain more though. Like David Dhawan trying to infuse logic.
After his motorcycle is shot down (when he’s riding it in the middle of nowhere… on a runway of all places, to be precise) and the 1200cc bike scrapes the road off for half a kilometre, the hero is shown pushing it back home. For continuity and logic, you see.
Even funnier is Nargis Fakhri who goes to meet her kidnapped rival Ileana D’Cruz and telling her: “You can wear any of my designer clothes. But the boy is mine.” Yes, because otherwise we would all be wondering in a David Dhawan movie how a kidnapped girl got to wear designer clothes in captivity!
Before you head to the hall, be warned that the ‘Tera Hero Idhar Hai’ song is earworm material and people may just catch you humming it. You might be judged… Ah well, snobs!
