What it is about…

Nagai Films’ Vangakkarai is produced and directed by K.T. Murugan, who has also written the story, screenplay, dialogue and lyrics and played the lead. Jothisha, Shinu, ‘Kadhal’ Sukumar and ‘Udumalai’ Ravi comprise the rest of the cast. The audio of the film was released in the presence of director Kalaipuli Sekaran, producer K. Rajan and A. R. Anbazhagan, president, Tamil Nadu Fishermen Federation. Vangakkarai turns the spotlight on the uncertain lives of the fishermen. Music highlights

The album consists of five songs of which the first song, ‘Whisky Rummu,’ gets repeated at the end. This Natabhairavi number is sung by Amrutha. ‘Pudu Ulagai,’ sung by M.K. Balaji, is set in the Karaharapriya raga. ‘Ennuyiril’ is an enchanting number rendered by Saindhavi. In ‘Vaigaraiye’, the opening background music is set in Sindubhairavi, whereas the pallavi is in Natabhairavi. And in saranam, it switches to Charukesi, making the song captivating.

What they say…

Producer, director and hero K.T. Murugan: I belong to the fishing community. Keen on showing our community in the right perspective, I requested various producers to make a film on the fisher folk but in vain. Hence I decided to go ahead with the project myself, notwithstanding my lack of experience in this field. I can’t thank my cast and crew enough for their co-operation.

Music director Anbarasu: I am a keyboard player and have completed the fifth grade from Trinity College of Music. I first scored the music for a short film, titled Othaiyadi, and later for a full-length feature En Manathai Kollai Adithal , which is yet to be released. As the story of Vangakkarai is based on fishermen and their lives, I have used sounds, which are part of the daily life of the community. All those who have seen the rushes have appreciated my work.
