It is almost dark and Georgekutty, who is drenched in the rain, enters a house. His anxious wife and kids heave a sigh of relief when they see him. A few quick dialogues later, he hugs his younger daughter.

A road-side house at Vazhithala, near Thodupuzha, is the location of writer-director Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam.

“Georgekutty (Mohanlal) is an orphan, who has only passed class four. But he is involved in a number of enterprises. He lives with his wife, Rani (Meena) and two daughters Anju (Ansiba), a Plus Two student, and Anu (Esther), a student of class eight, in a high range village in Idukki. At a certain point in their life, an unexpected event affects the family in a crucial way. The film narrates how they overcome the crisis,” says Jeethu. His earlier movies were Detective , Mummy & Me , My Boss and the recent hit, Memories .

As they go for the final take, Jeethu asks Mohanlal to mask the camera as he walks away from the frame. The superstar, who is clad in a mundu and shirt, agrees instantly and does a quick rehearsal. The director gives the thumbs up as soon as the scene is over.

Georgekutty, who used to run a video library, is now a real estate broker. He also manages the local cable TV unit. Thrifty and ambitious, he hopes to buy the local cinema theatre some day.

During the break, Mohanlal poses for photographs with fans who are there to catch a glimpse of their idol. After completing a few more shots, he is done for the day and walks away with a smile. The unit has to can some more scenes with the rest of the cast, at the courtyard.

“In spite of her family’s limitations, Rani is ambitious. She wants her children to study in the best of schools and wants them to live a good life,” says Meena about her character.

After a brief hiatus, Meena returns to Malayalam cinema with Balyakalasakhi , which has Mammootty in the lead.

Drishyam is being produced under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas and is pegged as a Christmas release.
