The final in Deepa Mehta’s ‘elements’ trilogy, the other two being Fire and Earth , Water is set in Varanasi in the year 1938 and portrays the plight of widows at that time. Written by Anurag Kashyap, the film also raises the evil of child marriage through Chuyia (Sarala Kariyawasam), a seven-year-old girl and other injustices which widows were forced to undergo after being abandoned by their families.

The love for Nature exhibited by the sisters is touching and their courage and conviction to protect the same is aimed at encouraging young minds to do the same.
