Making the perfect sound sandwich

The Buttering Trio offer a generous spread of psychedelic neo-soul music this weekend

They can make you dance and just as easily put you in a trance. Dishing out an explosion of psychedelic music from their electric live shows with a generous serving of looped beats and live instrumentation, Israel’s The Buttering Trio come to spread some love to Bengaluru this weekend.

Brought to the country by Mumbai-based music management company, Mixtape, the popular music outfit from Tel Aviv, featuring Keren Dun, Rejoicer and Beno Hendler, will cover four cities showcasing their psychedelic, groovy live concert experience.

Putting together a blend of loop-based beats, fat basslines and live instruments, including saxophone, synths and bass, with poignant lyrics, the trio is a force to reckon with in the global music circuit. With a growing fan base across the world, the band has shared the stage innumerable times with a number of renowned artistes.

Thrilled to be playing in Bengaluru for the first time, they chorus that they have heard only good things about the city and its music lovers. “We hope to just have a good time and make our audience feel the same. We don’t really have any high expectations. In fact, we feel low expectations are necessary for good relations,” says Rejoicer.

While they have had their share of Lata Mangeshkar, RD Burman and Zakir Hussain, the trio hope to discover more about the country’s music during their tour.

Touring across several countries, what they say is the most exhilarating experience of being a band is that “It feels like a family. There are always big laughs, love and criticism, cheerful moments and dramas, music and high spirits,” explains Rejoicer.

For the Bengaluru leg of their tour, which starts with Delhi and covers Pune and Udaipur, their set list will have a blend of new and old compositions.

“We will be playing songs from our previous three albums along with a few new songs from the Raw Tapes 2018 compilation and our fourth, unreleased album,” says Keren.

Playing as a supporting act during their Bengaluru show will be the team of Nikhil Narendra and Shreyas Dipali, collectively known as Deidra. The second half of the tour will see The Buttering Trio perform at two well-known music festivals – VH1 Supersonic in Pune and the Udaipur World Music Festival in Udaipur.

Known for being eccentric in their musicality and their names, the band’s previous albums share their quirkiness with names like Toast , Jam and Threesome . At the heart of their music, they chorus: “Is the joy of making music together.”

So when people give them a listen, “Be it on stage or on the record, we would like our audiences to take away not just one factor, but the several elements involved in the music-making process and the performance in totality. There is something for everyone in our music and each person can be inspired by different things – for some it’s the groove or the lyrics while for others it’s the sounds or the message. As long as it works in our favour, we would love them to give us a listen,” shares an excited Beno.

While they one-line that their musical journey so far is nothing less than “Fun and psychedelic”, they are resolute that they will never stop doing what they love to do – play music. “We are currently working on our fourth album and on some songs in Hebrew. We have concerts this year in Europe, Japan and probably USA. We will continue to make music as long as we can. There’s no stopping us!”

The Buttering Trio heads to Pune on February 10 to play at VH1 Supersonic and Udaipur on February 11 to perform at the Udaipur World Music Festival. Catch them live in Bengaluru at Fandom at Gilly’s Redefined, Koramangala, on February 9 from 9 pm onwards. Call 9606493304
