Abhiyum Anuvum review: An ill-conceived film that could have been much more

There’s a lot of effort that has gone into making Abhiyum Anuvum look young and edgy. The young couple in the film, Abhi and Anu, meet on Facebook, where Anu (Pia Bajpai) vlogs her social activities.

Abhi, however, works for an upscale IT company, where he’s required to make ‘presentations’ in order to bag overseas ‘projects’. He has a female colleague who sneaks out for smoke breaks and she’s also known to enjoy her drinks.

When they’re not taking selfies, Abhi and Anu find time to make out, even in their first meeting, because, come on, isn’t that what youngsters these days do all day long?

They also get married on a whim because Anu is impulsive and doesn’t believe in pushing good deeds for later. But that’s when their problems start, and their perfect, saccharine-sweet relationship comes to a halt, thanks to a sledgehammer of a twist.

Honestly, there’s so much that could have been done with such a great plot, especially when they’ve decided to take a progressive stand while dealing with a taboo topic.

But the execution is downright corny (Anu and Abhi even make a heart with their hands during their honeymoon) when it’s not outdated.

It’s perhaps a film that would have worked better in the 90s, back when youngsters did more interesting things than just take selfies all the time.
