The Chennai District Election Office has commissioned additional facilities that are expected to improve surveillance in all the 16 constituencies ahead of the Assembly elections.
Tech-driven, many of these facilities are programmed to alert officials about violations, if any, of the model code of conduct.
“Election officials and the flying squad will receive an SMS about each of the complaints registered. This is in addition to the provision created by the Election Commission of India whereby an email is sent to each of the officials, in the event of a violation,” said Chennai District Election Officer B. Chandra Mohan.
Besides Greater Chennai Corporation’s helpline 1913, a toll-free number — Ph: 18004257012 — has been launched. Residents have been requested to report violations of the model code of conduct, on these helplines.
As many as 48 teams have been formed to monitor the implementation of the model code of conduct in Chennai district.
Global Positioning System (GPS) devices have been fitted in vehicles of flying squads. With these, officials at the control room will track the squads in all the 16 Assembly constituencies in the district. The system also enables the district election office to study the challenges faced by them. The district election officer will be able to keep track of the vehicle’s movement. The squads patrol the Assembly constituencies round the clock, responding to violations to the model code of conduct.
Chennai District Election Office on Sunday launched an awareness campaign at Marina Beach in the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency.
