CPI (M) candidate Subhashini Ali has declared assets worth about Rs. 7.8 crore in her recently submitted affidavit to the Election Commission of India.
Ms. Ali, who, is contesting the Lok Sabha election from the Barrackpore constituency in the State’s North 24 Parganas district, is the daughter of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s close associates in the Indian National Army, ASC Col. Prem Sehgal and Captain Lakshmi Sehgal.
The noted trade unionist from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and a senior leader of the CPI (M)’s women’s wing All India Democratic Women’s Association earned about Rs. 12.67 lakh in the financial year of 2012-13 as showed in her income tax returns.
Ms. Ali owns movable assets worth about Rs. 29.74 lakh. This includes a car worth Rs.3 lakh and jewellery worth about Rs. 6 lakh.
Ms. Ali came to join politics via the trade union movement. She won the 1989 Lok Sabha elections from the Kanpur constituency in Uttar Pradesh. At present, she is a member of the CPI (M)’s Central Committee.
According to the party website she is known as ‘Kanpur Ki Beti’. It also states “as an amateur actor she appeared in few films.
She was formerly married to filmmaker Muzaffar Ali. Her son Shaad Ali, a filmmaker, has directed a number of popular films” Ms. Ali joined the CPI (M) in 1969.
