The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is an Australian public research university in the Sydney suburb of Kensignton. It is ranked 3rd in Australia, 45th in the world, and 1st in New South Wales 2017 QS World Rankings.

The university is now launching two new diploma programmes.

With the first intake commencing in September 2018, the Diploma in Science and Diploma in Engineering programmes will provide international students with an exciting new pathway into one of the world’s top universities. Successful completion of required courses in these programmes will enable students to enter the second year of an undergraduate degree programme in Science or Engineering. Students will now be able to achieve a diploma qualification as well as degree in the same time frame.

“These programmes are aimed at a different student profile than our Foundation Studies programmes. Foundation Studies graduates commence university in first year whereas our Diploma graduates will matriculate directly into the second year of their chosen degree,” says Marc Weedon-Newstead, UNSW Global, Group Executive Education.

The diploma programmes have been designed to provide students with a supportive learning environment over a 11-month study period. Key features of the programmes include: an Academic English and Communication Skills course, and curricula and courseware based on the first year of undergraduate degree courses.

“We see that the Indian youth have a lot of potential and zeal for education and growth. So, our policy is to expand good quality higher education by inviting students to study in the UNSW and also to collaborate with Indian universities.” says Professor Ian Jacobs, president, vice-chancellor, UNSW.

He continues: “In order to provide good quality education for all, the University of South Wales wants to form a good India-Australia relationship which would be beneficial for the talented youth of the country.”

According to Professor Jacobs, the step of promoting research discoveries undertaken by the university gives it an edge over other institutions. The agenda is to harness the great body of knowledge from classrooms and laboratories, and commercialise it, providing a broader perspective to social development and economic growth. It will also increase job opportunities for the citizens.
