Be clear in what you want to say

Media interviews could either be a telephonic one for a few minutes or may mean appearing on a live TV studio for an hour or a face-to-face interview. Whichever the case, it is essential to prepare for your media appearance.

Make sure you are clear about the subject and think carefully about three key messages you want to convey. Be prepared about your goals for the interview as you will be surprised how quickly time will pass.

Presentation

You have very little time that you get to interact with the journalists and the onus is on you to be clear in your communication. Articulate well and effectively convey the message.

Research

It is always good to know the journalist’s background. Basic knowledge about the media house they represent will also help. Searching on the Internet about them before the meeting will help make an informed discussion and engage with them effectively. It will also help you in providing custom information that is relevant to their readers.

Stick to what the reporter asks

Sometimes sharing too much of information can be dangerous. It is better to stick to answer what the reporter is asking. In case you‘re unable to answer any question, don’t give an irrelevant reply. Instead, politely mention that you don’t know the answer and will get back. This will help in not being misquoted.

Read on current news and share interesting information

Invest your time in reading the current news related to the topic. Make your answers interesting by adding relevant information, insights, facts, growth percentage, quotes and your beliefs.

Follow a story telling format and share true information

Media interview is not all about answering questions. It is about having intention and focus on your story throughout the interview. After all, you have a story to tell. It’s about getting out of an interrogating mode and shifting into a storytelling mode.
