Wall Street empowers Australian stocks

Australian shares took their cue from U.S. and European markets on Friday, gaining 1 per cent in early trade.

The ASX 200 index put on 44 points at the opening bell, or 1 per cent, to trade at 4,185.

In the United States, the Dow Jones index closed up 3.9 per cent and the main index in London put on 3.1 per cent.

The Australian dollar opened higher, trading at 1.0356 US dollars compared with 1.0287 US dollars on Thursday.
