Malaysian team on visit

September 29, 2011 09:45 am | Updated 09:45 am IST - CHENNAI:

An eight-member furniture and timber trade mission from Malaysia is in the country to explore the growing Indian market and to promote Malaysian products.

Organised by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), the delegates will visit Bangalore and Mumbai during their week-long stay in the country. The mission is led by MTIB chairman Datuk Madius Tangau and it comprised leading players of Malaysia's furniture industry.

Addressing the members of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) here, Mr. Tangau said their week-long stay was aimed at creating a better market for the Malaysian furniture and timber industries and for identifying newer technology in the field of furniture designs and plywood decorations.

According to trade members, Malaysia is one of the world's largest exporters of tropical timber and also a major producer and exporter of sawn timber, panel products, flooring, doors and other products.

The delegates held a business-to-business meeting with their Indian counterparts. On offer were wide ranges of furniture meant for office, kitchen, bedroom, living room, outdoor, garden and upholstered furniture/sofa. P. Murari, FICCI Advisor to president, said there was a burgeoning demand for wood and timber products in north India and in Tamil Nadu. The delegates should study the situation to meet the demands of India's social and physical infrastructure needs.
