Japan shares open higher

Japanese stocks were up in early Friday morning trading following overnight gains on Wall Street and European markets.

As of 9:48 am (0048 GMT), the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average had gained 55.64 points, or 0.62 per cent, to trade at 9,037.58.

The broader-based Topix index was up 4.8 points, or 0.62 per cent, at 775.68.

Nikkei rose nearly 1 per cent at the opening after the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 3.94 per cent overnight.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 76.93-95 yen, up from Thursday’s 5 pm quote of 76.58-61 yen.

The euro traded at 1.4213-4216 dollars, down from 1.4250-4252 dollars Thursday, and at 109.35-39 yen, up from 109.14-18 yen.
